Two motors and large piping inside a shed. The new irrigation equipment at Riverside Golf Course is helping to keep the greens looking greener.

The golf course recently replaced its aging pump station with a new model that speeds up and slows down based on demand. This feature will reduce wear and tear on the pipes and help to extend the life of the pump.

The pump also includes an internal monitoring system that will help improve the quality of irrigation by immediately alerting staff about low pressure and other types of issues.

Man in a ball cap sits in a red Gator-style ATV on a golf course.“Before, if the pump malfunctioned at night, we wouldn’t know about it until the next day,” Superintendent Brian Woolard said. “The old pump was more than 30 years old, and it was badly in need of repair.”

The golf course also installed new sprinkler heads that can be activated independently, which will help staff to maintain the greens more effectively and with better precision.

Woolard said activity at the golf course has been trending upward since before the pandemic. He credits the increase to staff’s efforts to improve playing conditions.

“The golf course is a good place to enjoy nature, get some exercise and breathe, whether you’re a resident or a visitor to Victoria,” Woolard said. “Many of our players are people who come into town to visit family or attend a conference, and we give them a place to play.”

The irrigation pump was included in the fiscal year 2021 budget as a routine capital expenditure. To learn more about the budget and the capital improvement program, visit www.victoriatx.gov/budget.
